The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is requiring better protection for second-row occupants for the 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, resulting in only 48 models qualifying so far, compared to 71 last year. The updated moderate overlap front test emphasizes back seat safety, and automakers are working to make their vehicles as safe for back seat passengers as they are for those up front.

Automakers have made significant progress in improving their automatic emergency braking systems, with 22 out of the latest 30 vehicles evaluated earning a good or acceptable rating. The new test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) addresses more dangerous front-to-rear crashes, including those involving motorcycles and semitrailers.
