The U.S. and Japan reached a new trade agreement with a 15% tariff rate on Japanese auto imports, which is less punitive than the previously scheduled 27.5% rate. While U.S. automakers are unhappy with the deal, Japanese car manufacturers have rallied, with three companies particularly well-positioned to protect their bottom lines.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is requiring better protection for second-row occupants for the 2025 TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, resulting in only 48 models qualifying so far, compared to 71 last year. The updated moderate overlap front test emphasizes back seat safety, and automakers are working to make their vehicles as safe for back seat passengers as they are for those up front.
